BEST SURF SPOTS IN AUSTRALIA

BEST SURF SPOTS IN AUSTRALIA

Photo: olanina.com

The best breaks and swells of Australia's never-ending, sun-drenched coastline.

AUSTRALIA is definitely renowned one of the world’s premier surfing destinations. Its 37,000 km coastline is blessed with beach, reef and point breaks to challenge the most experienced board-rider. For the less adept, there are countless easy-rolling swells that beginners can paddle onto safely and with confidence.

There are Surfing Australia accredited surf schools that operate at or near all of these locations, so learn-to-surfers can experience them too. For more information, visit Surfing Australia. Your own magic surfing experience could happen just about anywhere, but for the best of the best of Aussie waves, these are some very worthy contenders.

NORTH COAST

ANGOURIE to BYRON BAY, NSW

Angourie Beach, NSW

When the surfing counter-culture took hold in Australia in the late 1960s, the NSW north coast quickly became the promised land for anyone with a board and a hankering for an alternative lifestyle communing with the waves. “Discovered” in the early 1970s, the point break at Angourie remained relatively unheralded for the next two decades, but it’s world famous nowadays as home break of Aussie surfing legend Nat Young. Endlessly filmed and fawned over, the right-hand point-break at Lennox Head rates a mention in any discussion of Australia’s best wave.

Whether your preferred spot is Tallow Beach, Watego’s, Main Beach, the wreck at Belongil or elsewhere along the Byron Bay coast, the compelling factor here has always been the vibe. Kombi vans, dreadlocks, hippie gatherings, communal drumming and a collective feeling that there’s nothing to do tomorrow but get up and do it all again, belong at Byron as nowhere else.

NOOSA POINT BREAK, QLD

One of the best and most photogenic long-board breaks in the world, the point at Noosa is capable of producing a genuine 200 metre ride on its best days. In a decent swell especially there’s always a big crew of locals riding it who really know how to “walk the plank”, but when it’s smaller it’s perfect for beginners – a long, easy-rolling cruise.

SNAPPER ROCKS, QLD

Snapper Rocks, QLD

Snapper Rocks is a sand bottom point break considered as a world renowned surfing spot on the Gold Coast. Snapper, located at Rainbow Bay, is home to the world-famous ‘Super Bank’, regarded in surfing circles as the longest, most consistent and most hollow wave in the world. The swell here often reaches six to eight feet, and one good, clean wave can transport you from Snapper to Kirra, a distance of almost two kilometres.
Snapper Rocks hosts elite international surfing events such as:
  1. Quiksilver and Roxy Pro,
  2. Rip Curl Masters
  3. MP Classic.
It is also a favourite surfing spot of local world champs; Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Stephanie Gilmore, who enjoy nothing more than surfing their own ‘local’ break when they’re at home.

SEAL ROCKS AND PACIFIC PALMS, NSW

Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, Seal Rocks, NSW

Lighthouse Beach and Treachery Beach at Seal Rocks are south-facing and known for generating epic waves when a south swell rolls in. Just 22km up the road at Pacific Palms, Boomerang Beach and Bluey’s Beach are blessed with their own postcard waves shaped by prominent headlands, and often visited by cheeky dolphins that love showing the rest of us how surfing should really be done. This part of the NSW coast has remained miraculously undeveloped too; there’s nary a high-rise, nightclub or casino in sight, making it the perfect place for a true ‘soul surfer’ experience.

NORTHERN BEACHES, NSW

Manly Beach, NSW

Beginning at Manly Beach and running 20km north to Palm Beach, Sydney’s northern peninsula offers a succession of surf beaches unmatched by a city environment anywhere else on earth. Manly itself has playful beach breaks and punchy barrels, plus the offshore Queenscliff “Bommie” (bombora), joy for big wave riders. Neighbouring Freshwater Beach is much loved by bodysurfers and youngsters on body-boards; this is also where surfboard-riding was first introduced to Australia by Hawaiian surfer Duke Kahanamoku, on 15 January 1915. Continuing north, the 6km coastal corridor between Dee Why Beach and North Narrabeen is widely considered Sydney’s blue-ribbon surfing belt, with the legendary Long Reef bombora (known locally as “Butter-box”) situated smack in the middle. The surfing tribes of Mona Vale Beach, Newport Beach, Whale Beach and Avalon Beach can all make a good case for choosing their own local breaks over their neighbours’, or you could try all four beaches in a lazy half-day. Finally, the distinctive burnt-orange sands of Palm Beach mark the end of the peninsula, its 1.5km procession of beach breaks offering thrills and spills for surfers, body-boarders and wave-ski paddlers.

TORQUAY - BELLS BEACH, VIC.

Bell's Beach, Vic.

Historically and spiritually, Bells Beach is the home of Australian surfing and today is still the site of the country’s oldest and most prestigious professional surfing event; nowadays named the Rip Curl Pro, the winner still receives the traditional clanging bell trophy.
Swells from the Southern Ocean slow down and steepen over the shallow reefs to produce outstanding surf that can rise to five metres or more, so when it gets big, most of us are best advised to think of surfing Bells as a spectator sport.

CRESCENT HEAD, NSW

View from Crescent Head Golf Course, North Coast, NSW
The coastline beginning just north of Port Macquarie through to Crescent Head is accessed via Point Plomer Road, which ribbons the coast for 25kms. Along this route are four perfect right-hand point-breaks, tailor-made for long-board riders, grommets and beginners and capable of generating miracle rides of 200 metres. The point break at Crescent Head itself is revered by long-boarders the world over, and some of the sport’s best have been filmed here “Hanging Ten” or cross-stepping the length of their 10-foot planks. Halfway between Crescent Head and Point Plomer is the brilliantly named Delicate Nobby, a wedge-shaped rock formation that starts just off the beach and spears out into the Pacific, creating beach breaks on either side.

MARGARET RIVER - YALLINGUP AND PREVELLY PARK, WA

Pier overlooking ocean, Margaret River, WA
260km south of Perth, the tiny resort village of Yallingup marks the beginning of the famed Margaret River winery region, where wine enthusiasts and ‘waxheads’ (board-riders) have long converged in equal numbers. With several breaks that range from mild to monstrous depending on the swell, Yallingup is considered the best all-round surfing destination on Australia’s west coast.

Further south, Prevelly Park is the heart of serious Margaret River surfing territory, where swells up to six metres get spun into perfect barrels across the treacherous offshore reef. No place for beginners or the faint-of-heart, “Surfers Point” at Prevelly even attracts the big-name big-wave lunatics from the US and Hawaii, and it’s one of the few places in Australia where board-riders wear helmets and nobody laughs at them.

NUMBER 1 WOMAN SURFER

WOMAN SURFER # 1 - IS CARISSA MOORE THE ONE AND ONLY?

Growing up in Hawaii makes riding the tube almost second nature. The source: www.daily.epictv.com

Carissa Moore is the only woman to have won an ASP Women’s World Championship since Stephanie Gilmore’s rookie season… six years ago. When, after over half a decade, Steph reluctantly handed over the trophy at the awards ceremony, she told Carissa it was only on loan, and proceeded to take it back 365 days later.

Landing punts like this, almost at will, puts her very close to the top of the list of the world’s most accomplished female aerialists. The source: www.daily.epictv.com

At the start of her title run, Carissa played leading lady in Nike’s defining women’s surf film Leave a Message. Her performance was just that… a message, from Carissa to Steph. And to the rest of the world title contenders in waiting, that no matter how much style oozes out of their roundhouse cutbacks, no matter how hard they train to bust big air and no matter how much machismo they throw at pulling into waves of consequence, she knows what it takes to win.

...One day she will take that trophy back, and when she does, it’s going to take a coroner with a crowbar to pry it out of her cold, rigor mortised hands!

WIPEOUT OF THE YEAR

  1. Best Wipeout
  2. Best Women’s Performance
  3. Best Tube
  4. Biggest Wave
  5. Biggest Paddle In
  6. Ride of the Year

WIPEOUT AWARD NOMINEE #5

Alex Zawadzki

Alex Zawadzki finds his ride coming to an abrupt end at Shipstern Bluff, Tasmania on May 28, 2012. Frame grab from video by Simon Treweek. The source: www.daily.epictv.com
“I’d never caught a wave that big out there, and I was in the worst spot possible, so I wasn’t feeling too good about it.”

– Alex Zawadzki

That pretty much sums it up.  Local Tasmanian daredevil Alex Zawadzki, a.k.a. Zaddas ate it bigger than everyone else in the water on a day dubbed “Wipeout Wednesday” at Shipstern Bluff, one of the meanest waves in the world. To give you a feel for the spot, it’s located on a very remote stretch of coast and is only easily accessible by watercraft. The water is freezing and infested by very large great white sharks, and the wave itself is heavy in every sense of the word.  Shipstern’s is a classic slab where swells roll out of deep water and slam into a very shallow shelf of sea bottom, which in this case consists of very sharp boulders located in front of very tall, imposing and unscalable cliffs.  A wipeout here is already a touchy situation due to the aforementioned rocks and cliffs, but Alex’s is that much worse because it takes place on a wave that could easily be a contender for the largest wave of the year.  Plus, he is launched into the air off of a step in the wave’s face and lands on his back at the very bottom, before getting sucked back up the face, only to be pitched down into the depths again, but this time encased in the lip of the breaking wave.  If that’s not the wipeout of the year, then I don’t know what is!

In case you’d like a little more insight on that horrific wipeout:

WIPEOUT AWARD NOMINEE # 4

Brett Burcher

Brett Burcher goes for a bodysurf at The Right in Western Australia. Frame grab from video by Darren McCagh. The source: www.daily.epictv.com
Hailing from Ulladulla in the Australian state of New South Wales, Brett Burcher isn’t the stereotypical “big wave surfer” commonly found on the list of Billabong XXL entries.

However, he does enjoy searching out and pulling into heavy, barreling slabs. In this case it’s a wave known simply as The Right in Western Australia, which is one of the most challenging spots in a country chock-full of difficult to negotiate surf breaks. Sometimes it’s a thick, sucking slab. Sometimes it’s a massive wall of water. Sometimes it’s both. Brett catches it on what seems to be a rather innocuous looking day, but discovers that even when this wave looks almost fun and friendly, its dark and devious side lurks just under the surface, waiting to swallow any unsuspecting surfer in its path.

For a more all-around look at Brett Burcher’s act, check out his entry from the 2012 Innersection project.

WIPEOUT AWARD NOMINEE # 3

Tom Dosland

Tom Dosland performs a spectacular back-slide at Jaws, Maui, Hawaii on December 31, 2012. Frame grab from video by Elliot Leboe. The source: www.daily.epictv.com
Tom Dosland is a well-respected member of Hawaii’s underground charger brigade. Hailing from the outer islands, he’s a regular in the heavy line-ups throughout the chain, from little known secret spots to marquee breaks like the Banzai Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu and Pe’ahi on his home island of Maui.
Pe’ahi, better known by the moniker of Jaws is one of the heaviest waves in the world, and one place where a surfer definitely does not want to wipe-out.
Fortunately for his XXL nomination, or unfortunately for the beating he took, Tom happened into one of the best bails of 2012 at that infamous break just hours before ringing in the new year. One can only wonder if Tom’s entire life flashed before his eyes as he lay on his back watching hundreds of tons of water falling from the sky towards his head, or if he was just thinking… “Oh, fuck!”?

WIPEOUT AWARD NOMINEE # 2

Joao de Macedo

João de Macedo falls from the sky at Maverick’s, California on December 29, 2012. Video by Curt Myers/Powerline Producitons.

João de Macedo was bitten by the surf bug at a very young age in the waters of Praia Grande not far from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. Now he’s nominated for the most prestigious award there is… The Wipeout Award.

Macedo followed a classic path from stoked grommet pulling into shore break closeouts after school, to junior competitor in a contest jersey every weekend, to owner of a surf school living off his passion, and finally turning into a globetrotting expat with an itch to surf the big stuff. Not far from his new home in San Francisco, the legendary spot of Mavericks acted like a siren calling out to the inner charger inhabiting João’s soul.
It’s been almost a decade since his first session at California’s premiere big wave break, and he’s now a solid fixture in the line-up… so much so that he’s able to snag big enough sets to get himself into predicaments like this. And get himself nominated for the XXL Wipeout of the Year Award to boot!

WIPEOUT AWARD NOMINEE # 1

Daniel Rodriguez & Eric Rebière

Eric Rebiere (in the air, at left) and Daniel Rodriguez (in ball of spray, at right) perform an outstanding double wipeout on a convulsing lump of ocean near Oia, Galicia, Spain. Frame grab from video by Jet Galicia. The source: www.daily.epictv.com

Double dose of near-death surfing starring Spanish daredevil Daniel Rodriguez, and the Franco-Brazilian, former WCT surfer turned budding big wave maniac Eric Rebière.

These fine, upstanding gentlemen are part of a small, dedicated crew who’ve been exploring the coast of Galicia for the last few years searching for slabs and other sub-aquatic rock formations capable of delivering rideable waves in the triple-overhead and above category. This is one of their finds that has yet to be named publicly, but which is undoubtedly worthy of recognition in the hallowed halls of the planet’s most fearsome surf spots.
